Starlink Changed the Game: Why Remote Land Isn’t So Remote Anymore
Wilco Land | Off-Grid Technology
Not long ago, buying remote land often meant accepting one major tradeoff: you were probably going offline. If a property was miles from the nearest town, cell tower, or cable line, reliable internet could be difficult or even impossible to get.
Satellite internet is changing that—and Starlink has made remote connectivity far more practical.
Starlink uses a network of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet in places where traditional broadband may be unavailable or unreliable. The company specifically markets its Residential service for rural and remote areas, including locations beyond normal cell-service coverage. Starlink also offers portable options designed for RVing, camping, travel, and other on-the-go uses.
Remote Work Meets Remote Land
For rural property owners, this can be a big deal.
Imagine spending a week at your mountain cabin without completely disconnecting from work. Or setting up a recreational basecamp where you can stream movies at night, check weather forecasts, use online maps, make video calls, or stay connected with family.
For remote workers, the possibilities are even bigger. A property that once seemed too isolated for anything beyond weekend camping could potentially become a seasonal workspace, vacation retreat, or eventually even a full-time residence.

Starlink says its current service can support activities such as video calling, streaming, gaming, and working from home, although actual performance depends on location, network congestion, weather, obstructions, and the service plan being used.
A Perfect Match for Off-Grid Technology
Internet is only one piece of the off-grid puzzle, but technology keeps removing barriers.

Satellite Internet |
Solar panels and battery systems can provide electricity. Atmospheric water generators and rainwater collection systems may provide additional water options in appropriate locations. Composting toilets and alternative septic systems can help address waste. And now satellite internet can bring connectivity to properties far beyond traditional infrastructure.
Put those technologies together, and “remote” starts to mean something very different than it did 20 years ago.
At Wilco Land, we offer everything from recreational acreage and mountain properties to desert parcels and off-grid land across the United States. Many of these properties appeal to buyers precisely because they provide privacy, space, and freedom away from crowded cities.
Starlink doesn’t suddenly make every remote property build-ready, and buyers should always research power, water, septic, zoning, access, and Starlink availability for a specific parcel.
But one thing is clear: being miles from town no longer automatically means being disconnected from the world.
And as technology keeps improving, owning that cabin in the mountains—or a few acres in the middle of nowhere—may become more practical than ever.
