YOUR LAND
|

Not long ago, owning land without nearby power lines usually meant relying heavily on a generator—or spending a significant amount of money extending electricity to the property.
Today, that equation is changing.
Advances in solar panels, battery storage, portable power stations, and energy-efficient appliances are making it easier to bring electricity to places far beyond the traditional power grid. For people interested in recreational land, cabins, hunting properties, or off-grid retreats, that opens up a lot of possibilities.
Solar Power Doesn’t Stop at Sunset Anymore
Solar panels generate electricity when sunlight is available, but modern battery systems can store some of that energy for later use. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, pairing solar with battery storage allows electricity generated during sunny periods to be used after the sun goes down or when solar production is lower.
That makes solar much more practical for remote properties.
A properly sized solar-and-battery setup might provide electricity for things like lights, phones, laptops, internet equipment, small appliances, refrigeration, water pumps, and other essentials depending on the system’s capacity and the owner’s power needs.

“Solar panels produce direct-current electricity, while an inverter converts that electricity into the alternating current used by most household appliances. Batteries then provide a way to save electricity instead of needing to use it immediately.” |
Portable Power Has Changed the Entry Point
You don’t necessarily need to build a complete cabin electrical system on day one, either.
Portable power stations have made it possible to start smaller. Combined with portable or permanently installed solar panels, these battery systems can be useful for weekend camping, recreational properties, RV setups, hunting cabins, and temporary basecamps.
The Department of Energy notes that solar and storage technology can also be used in smaller-scale applications, including mobile and portable power units.
That means a landowner might start with enough electricity to charge devices and run basic equipment, then expand the system as the property develops.
More Possibilities for Remote Land
At Wilco Land, we sell everything from mountain and recreational properties to large acreage and truly off-grid parcels across the United States. Many of these properties appeal to people who actually want to be farther away from cities, neighbors, and traditional development.
Solar and battery technology doesn’t eliminate every challenge of off-grid ownership. Buyers still need to consider local regulations, access, water, septic, climate, sunlight exposure, and how much electricity they’ll realistically need.
But technology is steadily changing what is possible.
Combine solar and batteries with satellite internet, alternative water systems, and increasingly efficient off-grid equipment, and a property miles from the nearest utility line doesn’t necessarily have to feel primitive.
Sometimes the best part of owning remote land is getting away from the grid—while still bringing a little power with you.
